Gateway to Fall...It's Festival Time!
Autumn...Fall...whichever you choose to call the season, I call the months beginning with September and ending with November My Favorites. For an artist, I suppose the changing colors are partly the reason. I admit it...Greens are the most intriguing color that Nature can offer me to paint, but, at the same time as they change with the seasons so does my Artist's Mood...my Painter's Eye. I have experienced greens from the upper Midwest to the sandy East Texas Bluebonnet country to the juicy greens of the Louisiana Bayous...Green cannot be underestimated. So, when I begin my plans for Autumn or Fall Festivals I start in May turning the leaves from green to gold, red, russet, gamboge, and chestnut brown. Why so early? Well, of course, indulging in many artistic pursuits presents an element of TIMELINES and PREPAREDNESS. In addition, there is the summer heat which does not agree with me much anymore. PLUS, one cannot alter the leafy greens to fully describe the riot of color offered by fall foliage without thoroughly understanding how greens change over the course of the summer season. It is a course of study and refreshing of memory...every year. Summer dew and hazy country views are all great color compositions in themselves. Thus I indulge my painterly spirit in dawn's early light and entertain the thoughts that evening brings. The crickets chirp and the June bugs pelt the deck railing and birdsong accompanies me as I draw and paint.
THIS IS THE GATEWAY TO FALL FOR ME...the joy of beginnings and the excitement of endings...Festivals that allow me to share my year with fairgoers and collectors of art and students. Thank you one and all for the pleasure.

Making the Move to July
July...for some the mid-point of the year...For me that is not always true. The calendar year is not always January to December. I have many calendars, I suppose-there is the 'business calendar', the 'school year calendar', the 'art show calendar', the 'art guild calendar', the 'spring' calendar (also, summer, fall, and winter) and then there is the 'artist's calendar'.
As with so many creative people, MY calendar does not recognize months, days (or even years by this time of my life). I am motivated by urge...by mood...by request...by suggestion...by weather, temperature and comfort. You will see my motivation in the work I produce (or do not). Am I apologetic? Not anymore. Oh, I used to search for the whys and wherefores of my productivity, but I've outgrown the need to explain.
Have I become 'of age'? No, I don't think any artist really does that. I think we never want to reach that point because if we did we would no longer create anything different from what we've done before. We would stop reading what others say, we would stop looking at what others paint, we would stop considering what might happen if... We would no longer be curious about the world around us or the differences in artistic expression-be it materials or methods. And really! what sort of creative persons would we be if we were no longer curious?!
So, if I tell you I've taken a day off or frittered away a month of days you must understand that the mood must have been right for doing so, or the weather wrong for doing otherwise...or one of those other 'artistic' things!
I hope that you are doing what seems 'right' for you...right this moment and all those future moments that July will bring.

Stepping Out of Season
This year has been a particularly difficult one to define when it comes to creativity in my Studio. Normally winter is very productive for me. It was not this year. At least not in the sense that I consider normal. New ideas and their prototypes begin in the Winter ...This year the difference was that I worked 'outside' my Studio. I have done more Community interaction -on behalf of Art, Art Promotion and especially for Teaching this coming Summer.
Since Spring has been as abnormal as my Winter was the work I do outside has been stymied!
This is the time that I put my prototypes and ideas on Barnwood, the days when I work outside sanding, sealing and drilling. This is the time when I sit outside on my deck and draw Spring. Normally.
I am now 'stealing' workdays from other places...housework time, grocery shopping, writing, and sad to say, I'm behind schedule...WAY behind! I now have to deal with a CALENDAR as well! Events are set and the shuffle has begun. Setting aside 'idea time' bothers me. Art cannot flourish without actively pursuing ideas and making them happen.
BUT, another thought lurks in the back of my mind...Please! Don't spread it around :)... I'm getting old - Have I just slowed down and missed a few Winter days with their creative urges? Did I oversleep and fail to adjust to Spring? Did I just procrastinate and let the time slip by? I think I don't really want to hear the answers, but I'll freely admit to them. So, without further ado I will make a step in the right direction. When I step out of Spring it will be into a Summer filled with late-bloomers...New, touched by the weather, affected in some way by age...but done - by ME.
May your Spring end with success and fulfillment of original ideas and your Summer begin with sunshine and gentle breezes!
